Physical Activity for Life

Dynamo Girl is a unique program designed specifically for girls, age 5 and up, to build their self-esteem through physical activity. Not every girl is born a gifted athlete, but every girl can be athletic and taught fundamental sports skills in a safe and joyful environment.  Dynamo Girl is built on the conviction that competence in a variety of physical activities cultivates confidence in life.  Every new skill gained – how to throw a ball, jump rope, work as part of a team – demonstrates to our girls that challenges in life can be met with confidence and self-belief.

Dynamo Girl allows parents to re-imagine what it means to have a physically active daughter. Too often we jump to the conclusion that our daughters are not athletic. However, research by sports scientists and physical education specialists proves that girls engage in physical activity differently from boys. Their research also shows that girls increasingly drop out of physical activities as they get older. Our goal at Dynamo Girl is to reverse the downward trend of girls’ involvement in physical activity. By creating a program facilitated by specially trained women coaches who are smart, strong and positive role models, we provide girls the chance to grow their abilities in an environment designed for them.

Dynamo Girl is built on the conviction that competence in a variety of physical activities cultivates confidence in life.  Every new skill gained – how to throw a ball, jump rope, work as part of a team – demonstrates to our girls that challenges in life can be met with confidence and self-belief.

Unlike the vast majority of available programs, our gender-specific approach is geared toward the way girls like to be active. Girls seek competency and the sense of accomplishment garnered through learning new sports skills, but they also want a class that includes cheering, collaboration, and creativity. As the girls learn new sports skills, as individuals and in team play, Dynamo Girl emphasizes positive coaching; we provide opportunities for girls to work together; we reduce the level of overt competitiveness; and we foster a culture of mentorship.

When we inspire our girls to stretch themselves physically, we teach them to have faith in their own abilities in every sphere.  At Dynamo Girl, we don’t tell our girls they can’t do something.  We tell our girls that they haven’t yet learned how.  Our mission is to build a vibrant community of self-assured girls who love to play together, push themselves in new ways and learn that what matters is what their bodies can do, not how they look.

Dynamo Girl Parent Commitment

The parents of each Dynamo Girl must commit to their own level of involvement in the program. This commitment involves three parent education sessions throughout the membership year (fall, winter and spring). These educational sessions will include: deeper discussions of the academic research around girls and physical activity; groups for parents of each gender to discuss their own feelings around their daughters’ development and the challenges they face as parents of girls; and finally, ways in which the Dynamo Girl approach can inform how parents interact with their daughters around physical activity in family settings. In order for girls to develop their skills and their confidence they need to feel encouraged by their own families. Dynamo Girl also expects that parents will engage in physical activity with their daughters on their own.
